2024 RGD In-House Design Award Winner
Roles: Graphic design, creative direction
The Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment (WBLCA) Classification System was developed by KPMB Lab, a research initiative from KPMB Architects, and Integral Group. This methodological system supports outcomes like CO2 reduction in the architectural design process. The communications goal was to create a clear and engaging digital document for technically minded professionals in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries.
A unique visual language was developed for the document to reinforce the content: the letters representing each class of the system (D,C,B and A) are pixelated to varying degrees according to their model input resolution. The pixelated letters create a distinct look and also act as organizational devices by creating clear entry points for readers. KPMB Lab brand elements of the time were used to create cohesion, such as warm-toned gradients, echoing common sustainability visualizations like heat maps.
The WBLCA Classification System demonstrates thought leadership in sustainability for the built environment. It has been referenced in articles and guides worldwide, notably in the City of Vancouver’s current official Embodied Carbon Guidelines. The design helps it stand out among similar documents on the international stage, which often feature technical pages of dense text unbroken by engaging graphic devices.
This project won an RGD In-House Design Award of Merit.
